Scott Johnson

I am honored to be the principal of Copper Basin K-8. Prior to joining FUSD, I served as a middle school science and social studies teacher, Dean of Students, and assistant principal. This is my seventh year in the Florence Unified School District, where I have worked as an assistant principal at Skyline Ranch K-8 and Circle Cross Ranch Stem Academy.
I believe children have a greater respect for their teachers, their peers, and the lessons presented when they feel safe and sure of what is expected of them. One of my hopes as an educator is to instill the love of learning in our students, as I share my own passion for learning with them.

Oscar Duncan

Oscar’s passion for education began over 20 years ago when he left New Jersey to attend the University of Idaho on a javelin scholarship.  Desiring to make an impact in education, he chose to do his student teaching in the Compton Unified School District, a part of the inner-city Los Angeles school system.
After graduating with his master’s degree in Education, he immediately began working as a teacher, while also continuing his professional track career.  It was these early experiences that helped shape Oscar’s desire to make a difference in the lives of young people. Since that time, Oscar has been in and out of the formal classroom, teaching many different subjects and working at every grade level from kindergarten to college. He has also had the opportunity to coach track and field at various college institutions.
Oscar recently moved to Arizona to continue his career in education and is excited to be joining the administration team at Copper Basin.  In his spare time, he enjoys working out, coaching, and spending time with his wife Nicole and six children.

Laurie Black

I have 30+ years in the education profession. I started out as a teacher in Anchorage, Alaska. After 11 years, I came down to Arizona and started in a charter school as a teacher and was asked to move into administration. I was a principal in a large charter system for several years and then served as an Assistant Superintendent over Curriculum and Professional Development. In 2008, I joined Coolidge Unified School District, as Principal of San Tan Heights. My last year there, my team and I were able to move it from a “D” status to almost a “B”! I left there and went to Murphy Elementary School District. It is located in central Phoenix and is a District-wide Title I school. I promised the School Board that within the year it would go from a “D” status to a “C”. Which it did! I was then asked to take over the Directorship of Head Start and work with the City of Phoenix and the Head Start Federal Grant. I enjoyed my last 6 years with Head Start. It opened my eyes to the emotional social side of learning and the health and safety issues so overlooked by “making the grade”. I am excited about my new job at Florence Unified School District and with Copper Basin. I am looking forward to working as a team for the success of our students and our school community.
