COVID-19 UPDATE PAGE
Coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19 (previously known as 2019 novel coronavirus or 2019-nCoV), is a new respiratory virus first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. It is part of a larger family of viruses called coronavirus, some of which are in circulation normally and can cause illnesses like the common cold. This web page is designed to provide a synopsis of the situation and how FUSD has and will continue to be ready to protect student and staff health and well-being.

Refunds: Field Trips and Spring Sports
In order to comply with social-distancing guidelines, FUSD has cancelled all field trips and spring sports for the rest of the 2019-2020 academic year. Refunds will be issued for the amount paid for the field trip or spring sports pay-to-participate fee. The refund will be issued to the first guardian listed on our registration records. Unfortunately, the Arizona Department of Revenue prohibits the refund of tax credit contributions, however, you will still claim the amount contributed when filing your tax return and receive the benefit of your contribution. Our goal is to have refunds issued as quickly as possible, but considering the enormity of this process, we thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

Dear FUSD family,
As we continue to navigate these uncertain times, our focus has continually been on what is best for our students and families. The Florence Unified School District continues to implement the Flexible Learning Framework; this means a focus on enrichment and deeper learning of content already presented. On Tuesday, April 14, 2020, the FUSD Governing School Board adopted a flexible grading policy that aligns with this focus on students and families. The flexible grading practice makes the following changes:
- All grades are frozen in time on the date in which schools closed.
- Students will be assigned only a minimal “participation” grade for assigned coursework.
- Any student not completing assigned coursework will be provided an opportunity to complete all assigned work prior to the end of the school year.
- No student’s grade will be negatively impacted due to circumstances associated with COVID-19 pandemic national emergency and school closure.
- From the date of initial closure through the end of the regularly scheduled school year, students are to engage in learning opportunities in order to increase knowledge and may make up missed work or retake exams. All assigned coursework is for review, intervention, and enrichment purposes only.
- At the end of the regularly scheduled school year, teachers of record may update grades to reflect new learning and related work (exam retakes and additional completed work).
- Grades can only improve. They cannot get worse.
SENIORS:
- GPA and class rank will be based upon seven semesters (not including this semester)
- Transcripts will still reflect grades and credit for 4th quarter
- No changes will impact any scholarships or college entrance requirements
- Community Service hours have been waived
- No Senior will be prevented from graduating if they were passing at the time of the school closure
We are confident that these changes are in the best interest of our students as we end the school year. We want to thank our families for being our educational partners during this time. If you have specific questions about your child’s grade or schoolwork, please contact your school principal.
Yours in Education,
Chris Knutsen, Superintendent

Chris Knutsen, Superintendente

Hello FUSD family,
We have just concluded our first week of online instruction with our Flexible Learning Framework and I am incredibly proud of our teachers, students and parent partners who have all stayed connected during this unprecedented time. It is evident that we miss the social connections that a school environment brings but in order to flatten the curve of the Coronavirus, we must adhere to the CDC guidelines and maintain social distancing. Therefore, all FUSD schools will remain closed through the end of the 2019-2020 academic school year per the directive from Arizona Governor Doug Ducey and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman.
I know that many of our staff, students, and families were looking forward to spring activities, events, field trips, sports, prom and especially graduation. Florence Unified School District is committed to finding a way to recognize students during our end of the year celebrations. Our District team has been working hard at creatively problem solving and hope to provide answers to questions families have about these events. As of now, the situation is uncertain so we are only able to provide general information. I want to encourage you not to let these circumstances keep you from making memories. Know that you have a team of educators behind you, dreaming with you, and working to give you the celebration you have earned!
HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION: We are planning to hold graduation as scheduled at all three of our high school locations. Public health and safety will be our number one priority, therefore, any ceremony that takes place will strictly follow all state and federal recommendations and procedures from the CDC related to the Coronavirus at that time. Our goal is to be able to provide the class of 2020 with the “least restrictive” yet most traditional ceremony possible and we are working on several different options to accomplish this. More information will be provided as we continue to assess and monitor the Coronavirus pandemic.
PROM: We have canceled Prom as scheduled at the planned off-site venues to abide by the “stay at home” order as issued by the Governor. However, if safety and health conditions allow, each high school will host a Prom on site sometime in mid to late May. Due to the fluidity of this situation, we will communicate more information at a later date.
SCHOLARSHIP and AWARDS NIGHT: We are working to explore creative ways to safely recognize our students’ outstanding academic and extracurricular accomplishments and will provide more detailed information at a later date.
YEARBOOKS: Yearbooks at all high schools are on track to be completed and delivered to the schools in May. The schools will communicate information for distribution.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY and STEM: Both of these events will be held in the Fall when school resumes.
SENIOR BREAKFAST: Due to the school closure and stay at home order, we are unable to hold a Senior Breakfast.
REFUNDS: FIELD TRIPS and SPRING SPORTS: In order to comply with social-distancing guidelines, FUSD has cancelled all field trips and spring sports for the rest of the 2019-2020 academic year.
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION: We are currently working on an online process for parents to register your child for the 2020-2021 academic school year and will update you once that online registration process is in place. We will also make accommodations for families who may not be able to register their child online.
K-8 and KINDERGARTEN PROMOTIONS: Kinder promotions will still be held at this time, however we will continue to adhere to social-distancing guidelines therefore, this may change due to the fluidity of the situation.
PERSONAL BELONGINGS: In compliance with Governor Ducey’s stay at home order, we have closed off all campuses until further notice. Once this order has been lifted, we will make arrangements for parents to pick up any personal belongings left in the school.
GRAB & GO MEALS: Lunch and breakfast bags will continue to be distributed throughout the school closure.
All of the information I have communicated can be found on our website at www.fusdaz.com however, we will continue to answer all of your questions throughout this pandemic.
Our efforts are focused on doing what we can to ensure the safety of our entire community as we move forward. We will continue to monitor the situation, follow the Center for Disease Control (CDC) prevention guidelines and provide information to parents as it becomes available. We appreciate your understanding as we navigate these unchartered waters together. Until we are back in school please, stay home, stay healthy and stay connected!
Wishing you good health,Superintendent, Chris Knutsen

Hola familia FUSD,
Chris Knutsen, Superintendente -
A Letter to ESS Parents; Friday, April 3, 2020
Dear Families of students receiving services from the Exceptional Student Services (ESS) Department:
The ESS department has been diligently working to develop a plan to support the needs of our students with disabilities during this unexpected school closure. FUSD’s District Administration has worked in close collaboration throughout the planning process and ESS staff have participated in all aspects of this preparation. We propose to provide your student’s special education services via FUSD’s Flexible Learning Framework, that started the week of Monday, March 30th, 2020, comparable to what we are providing to our general education students because of this closure. The Flexible Learning Framework may include alternate, non-digital activities if technology is not available in your home. We made the decision of providing distance learning opportunities to your student based on a combination of maintaining compliance with Governor Ducey’s orders and determining the most accessible format to allow our students to continue to have access and progress in their learning. ESS service coordinators/teachers have been and will continue to be in touch directly with our students and families on their caseloads to discuss the way special education and related service(s) will be provided to your student.
We also want to reassure you that beginning the week of Monday, March 30, 2020, general education teachers are expected to provide instruction and accommodations to the greatest extent possible/appropriate based on individual student plans. ESS teachers and general education teachers are expected to collaborate to ensure access to the content for students with disabilities.
IEP/MET meetings will be conducted virtually or via phone conference, as scheduled. We will provide you with copies of any draft documents prior to the IEP/MET meeting to ensure you are able to participate. If you do not want to have your child’s meeting virtually/telephonic and would prefer to wait until school resumes, please contact your child’s ESS service coordinator/teacher as soon as possible.
FUSD’s priority is to support the health and safety of our students, staff, and families. We are all experiencing our own unique challenges. Childcare, home/family situations, and availability will vary for all students and staff included. Support, flexibility and empathy on the part of us all is essential.
On behalf of the FUSD Exceptional Student Services Department, we all truly appreciate your understanding and patience as we face this new and unprecedented challenge together.
Sincerely,Nora Boettcher, Ed.S., NCSP

Hello FUSD Families,
I hope this email finds your family healthy and well. We understand that the current situation has caused great changes in every part of our lives. However, we are committed to making sure your child is given every opportunity to continue learning during this difficult time. By the end of the week you should receive a phone call from your child’s teacher or school outlining educational opportunities we will be providing during school closure.
The instruction will be provided primarily online through Google Classroom. If you don’t have access to the internet, families will have the option to request paper copies of instructional materials as needed. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you need any assistance with Google Classroom or any of our educational software. We will be providing a parent guide and webpage to help parents understand and assist students using Google Classroom. We will do our best to meet the needs of all students, regardless of what their technological resources are at home.
We sincerely appreciate your patience and support as we endeavor to provide the best delivery of instruction to students. We know that students are anxious to get back to school and continue their progress towards achieving their educational goals, and we look forward to that as well.
As you help to prepare your child for a new way of interacting with their teacher(s), here are some suggestions we recommend to help them be successful:
- Identify an area in the home for learning with adequate lighting that is free of distraction as much as possible.
- Ensure your child has connectivity to the internet (streaming programs like Netflix can dramatically reduce quality of connectivity for other devices).
- Set a schedule (and breaks); Identify a specific block of time for school work to be completed each day. Equally important is to encourage timely breaks in screen time
- If you feel stressful, close the books or the computer and something fun to do! You can always pick up where you left off.
FUSD will continue to provide breakfast and lunch, grab & go meals to every student 18 years and younger from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm Monday through Friday. These meals are provided at no charge and will be distributed curbside. Students should be present in the vehicle in order to receive a food bag.
Grab & Go bags can be picked up at the following locations:
Monday, March 23 – 27
Florence K8
Anthem K8
Magma Ranch K8
Walker-Butte Leadership SchoolAdditional site starting Monday, March 30
San Tan Heights K 8
Skyline Ranch K 8
LifePoint Church (across the street from Copper Basin K 8)We understand that there are still many questions moving forward, such as the scheduling of field trips, end-of-year concerts, athletic events and graduations. The district is working hard to come up with alternate plans if necessary and we will communicate that as soon as possible. Please continue to check your FUSD app and our FUSD website for up to date information.
Please reach out to your school administrator if you have questions or concerns. We are all in this together and will continue to work to meet the needs of ALL our FUSD students and families.
Yours in Education,
Superintendent,

Chris Knutsen -
Friday, March 20, 2020
Good afternoon FUSD families,
Governor Doug Ducey and Superintendent Kathy Hoffman just announced today March 20, 2020 a two-week extension of school closures through Friday, April 10, 2020. The goal of their decision is to get the students back to school as soon as possible without compromising their health as well as providing parents, caregivers and district staff time to prepare a course of action.
At this time, FUSD administrators will be preparing an online, flexible learning framework that will be designed to help students practice their skills and learn independently during the closure. More information will be provided to parents next week after the principals meet with their staff.
We understand you may have questions regarding the extension of the school closure but please be assured that FUSD will continue to monitor and work with our school community to determine what is best for all stakeholders throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the Arizona Department of Education will be working with educational leaders at the local, state and federal level to provide guidance to us regarding high school graduation.
We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and understanding throughout this situation and we will continue to update you and provide as much information as possible. We encourage all our families to continue to practice social-distancing, hand-washing hygiene and common sense during the school closure. Please read the open letter from Governor Doug Ducey and Superintendent Kathy Hoffman by clicking the link.

Monday, March 16, 2020
FUSD families,
Please be advised that Florence Unified School District schools will be closed until March 27, in accordance with the directive issued by Governor Doug Ducey and Arizona Department of Education Superintendent Kathy Hoffman on March 15. FUSD is currently on our second week of spring break and will remain closed for students until March 27.
FUSD has monitored this situation from the beginning and we have followed all recommended guidelines for keeping our community safe while supporting the needs of our families and staff. Our goal was to remain open but the decision by our state leaders was made to help mitigate the spread of the virus through social distancing.
Today, the District’s administration will meet to formulate a plan to provide food service to children as needed. We will also develop a plan for the provision of educational services beyond March 27 should the schools remain closed.
We understand that you may have questions about how this will affect you. We will continue to do our best to communicate those plans on a timely basis. We care about our FUSD family and we will continue to take the necessary steps to address the needs of everyone during this fluid situation. We are grateful for your understanding during this unprecedented time. Let us face and overcome this challenge together. -

The Arizona Department of Education, Arizona Department of Health, and the Governor’s office have recommended that schools remain OPEN for the time being and so Florence Unified School District will resume school as planned on March 23, 2020. We are continuing to monitor the COVID-19 situation and taking our direction from local government agencies as well as the Arizona Department of Health Services and the CDC to ensure the safety of all our students, faculty and staff. We encourage parents to continue discussing the importance of handwashing with their children and to ensure that they stay home from school if they are showing symptoms of illness. We thank our entire FUSD community for their help in keeping everyone safe and healthy.
As this situation evolves, we will continue to update our webpage as more information is received. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, please refer to the official web page of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html

On Monday, our administrative team met to discuss and implement a course of action to address the concerns about the COVID-19 (Coronavirus). Fortunately, our district is on spring break for the next two weeks; which allows our team the time to take proactive steps in ensuring a sanitized learning environment for your students when they return.
- Our team will be cleaning and sanitizing each campus, our transportation department, and offices. They will be utilizing hospital grade cleaning agents along with foggers that will disperse sanitizing spray on all surfaces.
- Each school will be provided an ample supply of cleaning agents, hand sanitizer and hand soap to constantly encourage routine hand hygiene practices throughout the day when students return.
- Posters and other visual reminders will be posted throughout the district as another constant reminder to thoroughly and frequently wash your hands.
- We will update our District’s COVID-19 informational webpage bi-weekly to communicate with our parents and staff.
